PTI won’t remain silent on amendments in higher judiciary: Khan

Says government is mistaken if it thinks PTI will remain passive over constitutional amendment

The PTI would not remain silent on the proposed changes in the judiciary, former prime minister Imran Khan said on Saturday and added that his party was preparing for a street movement to counter the constitutional amendment.

“If the government believes it can amend the judiciary without opposition, it is mistaken,” he told reporters in Adiala Jail. “Democracy is being systematically undermined.”

The ruling coalition is expected to present a “constitutional package”—that aims to fix the chief justice of Pakistan’s tenure at three years—on Sunday (tomorrow). The PTI has opposed it.

He expressed his readiness to sacrifice his life, stating, “I will not accept anyone’s subjugation; they are completely intent on enslaving the nation.”

Khan questioned how people could be removed from Parliament without the National Assembly speaker’s consent, warning, “What is happening to us today could also happen to them tomorrow.”

When asked about police entering Parliament Lodges during his tenure, he replied that he was unaware of such incidents, but maintained that no one had ever been removed from Parliament until now.

The former prime minister alleged that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was on the verge of being convicted in a money laundering case. He claimed that besides the money laundering case, all other cases against Shehbaz, Nawaz Sharif, and Ishaq Dar were outdated.

When questioned about the drug case against Rana Sanaullah, Khan responded that the Anti-Narcotics Force led by a major general initiated the case. He mentioned that he had called the ANF chief, who briefed the cabinet and presented evidence related to Sanaullahs case, claiming that the drugs were seized from him. “How were we supposed to know?” Khan remarked.

The PTI chairman claimed that when journalist Matiullah Jan was taken, they managed to secure his release.

He expressed concerns that “efforts are being made to bring CJP Qazi Faez Isa into the spotlight,” claiming that such actions aim to protect human rights violations and electoral fraud.

The PTI founder claimed that there were restrictions on the media and judges were being intimidated.

“The government will be responsible for whatever happens. I am telling the party to get ready. They want me to accept subjugation, but that will not happen. The PML-N and the PPP are not practising politics; they are promoting slavery, claiming to respect the vote while actually honouring the boot,” he stated.

Khan also mentioned that a new FIR has been filed against him and suggested that the Hamoodur Rahman Commission report should be read and presented to the nation. He argued that if the recommendations of the commission had been implemented, martial law would never have occurred in Pakistan.

He added that regardless of the circumstances, a rally will be held in Lahore on September 21.

“Whether we are granted permission or not, holding this rally is our democratic and constitutional right. We have not been allowed to hold a rally for a year and a half. The judiciary should either acknowledge that democracy has ended in the country or stop the obstacles that have been set up in Islamabad. Despite these, people still came out. Has Punjab become a police state where we cannot hold a rally?”
