Speaker proposes ‘charter of Parliament’ to solve issues between govt and opposition

A committee has been formed including members of both sides

The National Assembly witnessed heightened political tensions today, stemming from the recent arrests of parliamentarians within the parliament building. The Speaker, Ayaz Sadiq, proposed a Charter of Parliament, aiming to bridge the divide between the opposition and government members.

Recognizing the need for a more cooperative environment, Sadiq urged both sides to move beyond past conflicts and work towards a shared vision of improvement. He suggested a formal agreement, a Charter of Parliament, where all members could commit to a set of principles for constructive engagement.

Sadiq also emphasized the importance of mutual respect during parliamentary debates, encouraging members to express their views while upholding the dignity of their colleagues. He proposed that both opposition and government members collaborate to establish clear rules for parliamentary conduct.

Sadiq also acknowledged the production orders issued yesterday for the arrested parliamentarians. He further stated that some security personnel were suspended following the production orders.

The session concluded with the unanimous approval of a resolution to form a 16-member committee to ensure the smooth functioning of parliament.

The resolution for the committee was tabled by Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, calling for the establishment of a parliamentary committee.

This committee, composed of members from both the ruling party and the opposition, will be tasked with examining issues related to parliament’s functioning and proposing solutions to ensure its smooth operation.

Earlier in the day, the Speaker took disciplinary action, suspending the House’s Sergeant at Arms and four other security officials. This decision followed the alleged arrest of lawmakers by Islamabad police and masked individuals within the National Assembly premises, highlighting a serious security lapse.
