PTI leader Salman Akram Raja has replaced Omar Ayub as the PTI secretary general after the party founder accepted the latter’s resignation.

“Congratulations to Salman Akram Raja. I have no doubt that he will also perform brilliantly,” PTI leader Hammad Azhar said in a social media post while reacting to the development.

Earlier in the day, Ayub wrote in a social media post that former prime minister Imran Khan has accepted his September 4 resignation letter

“I had requested Senator Shibli Faraz sahib Opposition Leader Senate and Chief of Staff to convey my resignation as Secretary General PTI during his meeting with PM Imran Khan sahib on Thursday,” he said.

“Holding the offices of Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Secretary General PTI, pursuing my legal battles and looking after the issues of the constituency I represent in the National Assembly are all taken together a tremendous workload,” Ayub stated and added that he would continue to work as a PTI worker.

A private TV channel reported that Khan has separated the party’s parliamentary and practical political affairs. As a result, Opposition leaders in Parliament Omar Ayub and Senator Shibli Faraz will lead the parliamentary team.

A think tank would be established under the leadership of Raoof Hassan, who would oversee the release of a white paper on government performance and electoral matters. Notifications regarding such changes would be issued after a party rally.

In the past, party leaders such as Shahryar Afridi, Shandana Gulzar, Sher Afzal Marwat and former PTI spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry have gone public with their grievances against the party’s leadership, especially their inability to secure the release of Imran Khan.

Last month, Marwat mended fences with Khan after three months.

Marwat was removed from the party’s core and political committees in May following his statements about Saudi Arabia and the party leadership. The former judge had lashed out at senior party figures for what he called depriving him of the coveted position of the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee.

He had alleged that Senate opposition leader Shibli Faraz was the one to inform Khan about the Saudi ambassador raising reservations regarding Marwat’s nomination.
