The Power Division stated on Sunday that reports circulating on various TV channels about the investigation committee summoning the owners of independent power producers (IPPs) “are untrue.”

In a statement, the Power Division clarified that no such summons was issued for the IPP owners for the following day.

This clarification comes amid ongoing discussions regarding the operations and financial transparency of IPPs in the country.

Sections of media reported that nearly six owners from IPPs companies have been summoned to Islamabad on Monday (tomorrow) for what officials were calling “courteous questioning.”

Earlier this month, it was reported that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif-led government was planning to adopt a similar approach as the previous Imran Khan administration in dealing with IPPs.

Initially, influential teams visited various power plants to collect records and data. Following that, senior executives from IPPs were questioned in different cities and they were being called to Islamabad for further discussions.

They were being urged to agree to new contract terms as the government highlighted substantial profits received by such companies, both legally and otherwise.

Minister for Power Awais Leghari informed a parliamentary panel that around 50 to 60 experts were currently reviewing all aspects of power plant agreements to determine the government’s next steps.

According to official documents, the government disbursed approximately Rs1 trillion in capacity payments to 26 IPPs using gas, RLNG, and RFO over the past decade, starting from 2015.

Such plants were established under various power generation policies before 1994, as well as in 1994 and 2002.
