An anti-terrorism court discharged on Tuesday former prime minister Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi in 12 cases related to the incidents of May 9. She was named as a suspect in several sensitive cases, including those involving the GHQ and ISI offices.

Judge Malik Ejaz Asif presided over the hearing held at the Adiala Jail. The police had filed a request for her summons and physical remand.

After a detailed hearing regarding the request for Bibi’s physical remand in the May 9 cases, the ATC rejected the police’s application.

The police argued that they needed to investigate the former first lady concerning the attack on the GHQ, among other cases. Her lawyer, Salman Safdar, presented counterarguments against the police’s requests during the proceedings.

Violent protests broke out after former PM Khan’s arrest from the Islamabad High Court premises in a graft case on May 9, 2023. Protesters attacked state buildings and military installations, but the PTI distanced itself and called for a judicial inquiry into the events.

Khan has made similar demands in the past, saying that he had only called for peaceful protests outside the GHQ.

Earlier this month, the PTI founder decided to offer a conditional apology for May events.

“If any of my party workers were found to be involved in the May 9 riots, I will expel them from the party and I will offer an apology if our crime was proven through CCTV footage,” Khan told reporters at the Adiala Jail on August 7.
