Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid left the country after reportedly stepping down from her position as prime minister. However, the confirmation about her resignation has only come from the Bangladeshi army chief who effectively sits at the helm of affairs at the moment.

There remains a possibility of Hasina Wajid forming a government in exile.

The possibility was discussed on Aaj News shortly before Bangladesh army chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman confirmed Hasina’s resignation.

Shaukat Piracha of Aaj News said that Sheikh Hasina had probably left for India and it is not clear if Bangladesh will come under martial law or if any other form of government would take shape.

He said it was also not clear if Sheikh Hasina would form a government in exile and try to rule from India. If Sheikh Hasina resigns before leaving the country, there can be a smooth transition, he added.

However, if Sheikh Hasina Wajid formed government in exile it would create a lot of problems and confusion, he said citing the example of Afghanistan where the Taliban are in power but their government is not recognized by the UN.

Sheikh Hasina intended to record a speech before hurried departure

Hasina Wajid left Dhaka in a military helicopter and she was reportedly headed to West Bengal in India.

After Hasina Wajid’s resignation was confirmed by the army chief, the possibility of her forming a government in exile is very remote. Still, a final announcement of resignation from Hasina Wajid was still awaited.

The reports that minutes before her hurried departure she wanted to record a speech but did not find an opportunity and had to leave may be deeply troubling for the military.
