Quetta to suspend internet, cellphone services on Muharram 9,10

The Balochistan provincial government has announced that internet and cellphone services will be suspended in Quetta on Muharram 9 and 10, from 6am to 12am midnight.

This is part of the increased security measures being taken in the region for the Muharram observances.

Additionally, the provincial government has imposed Section 144 in seven districts, banning public gatherings and pillion riding during this period.

According to Home Minister Meer Zia ullah Langau, 8,000 security personnel will be deployed in Quetta on the day of Ashura (10th Muharram), and five Quick Response Force platoons of the Pakistan Army will remain on standby.

The cellphone services will also be suspended in the districts of Jhal Magsi, Jaffarabad and Usta Muhammad on Muharram 9 and 10.

The federal government has also approved the deployment of the Pakistan Army and Civil Armed Forces across the country as a security measure during Muharram.

The details of troop deployment will be finalized with the authorities concerned.

These security measures are being implemented to maintain law and order during the Muharram observances, which see large public processions and gatherings across the country.
