Govt claims electricity bills will be lower in July compared to June

NEPRA chairman questions logic behind claim

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) held a hearing chaired by Chairman Wasim Mukhtar to discuss the government’s request for an increase in electricity prices.

During the hearing, officials from the Power Division briefed the authority on the proposed uniform tariff.

The Power Division officials stated that the price calculation was based on a dollar exchange rate of 300 rupees, resulting in a 38 paisa per unit increase in capacity payments.

In response, NEPRA Chairman questioned the logic behind the increase, stating, “If we are raising the tariff, then how is it decreasing?” He also pointed out that the June adjustments would be finalized in July.

Power Division officials assured the authority that the increase would not significantly impact consumers’ bills, emphasizing that it was merely a tariff reset.

They claimed that the electricity bill would be lower than June’s after the increase.
