Journalist killed in Khyber district laid to rest after protest

A Pakistani journalist, Khalil Jibran, who was shot by unknown assailants on Tuesday in the Khyber district of the KP province was laid to rest on Wednesday.

Before the burial, a group of journalists protested on the main highway with his body.

Jibran was shot near his home in the Mazrina area of tehsil Landi Kotal in the Khyber district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The journalist was travelling in vehicle with another person identified as Sajid, who was injured.

The vehicle had an issue so they stopped it; however, some assailants came and pulled out Jibran, shooting him dead and fleeing the scene.

Jibran died on the spot, while Sajid was then transported to the hospital to receive medical treatment.

According to the police, Khalil Jibran had previously received threats from terrorists as he was affiliated with a local TV channel, Khyber News.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister, Sardar Ali Amin Gandapur, condemned the killing of journalist Khalil Jibran. He took notice of the incident and directed the police to take immediate action to arrest the elements involved in the firing.

Gandapur expressed his heartfelt condolences and sympathy for the deceased journalist.

The Chief Minister assured the affected family members that the killers will not be able to escape the law.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, also condemned the murder of journalist Khalil Jibran and expressed his condolences to the bereaved family.

The funeral prayers of journalistwere performed in KP and were attended by political and social leaders, journalists, and other individuals.

Before the funeral prayers, journalists, political and social personalities also protested on the Pak-Afghan highway along with the deceased’s body.

The protesters demanded that the killers be immediately arrested, a martyr’s package be provided to the grieving family, and free education should be ensured for Khalil’s children.

A case has been registered at the Landi Kotal police station.

The DPO (District Police Officer) said that the case has been registered on the complaint of the injured lawyer Sajjad against unknown accused, which includes sections from the anti-terrorism law.

The DPO explained that in the attack, advocate Sajjad was injured, who is also an eyewitness to the incident.
