The Punjab government has decided to help farmers power their tube-wells using solar power.

The solarisation of tubewells has been planned amid reports that residential power consumers were likely to face a government tax or a cut in a net metering tariff because the rapid pace of solarization in the country was disrupting the government’s energy plan.

This initiative to help farmers power their tubewell using renewable energy will contribute to environmental sustainability, sources in the government said on Wednesday.

The government will provide a subsidy of up to 50% per tubewell for the transition to solar power.

There will be substantial financial support of Rs12 billion for farmers across the province.

The scheme allows each farmer to convert their fossil fuel-powered tube-wells to solar-powered ones, up to a capacity of 20 kilowatts.

This shift is expected to significantly reduce electricity costs for farmers, who often bear the brunt of high power bills.
