Fact check: Is the video of a wheelchair-bound woman being robbed from Karachi?

The video is actually neither from Karachi nor recent

A video has recently gone viral on social media depicting a shocking incident where a motorcycle-riding thief robbed a woman in a wheelchair. The video was attributed to Karachi, further fueling concerns about rising street crime in the city.

However, while the incident is from Pakistan, it is not from Karachi and is not recent either.

The footage shows an elderly woman in a wheelchair being pushed down a street by a younger woman. Suddenly, a motorcyclist approaches and snatches the younger woman’s purse.

The force of the robbery causes both women to fall, with the wheelchair overturning and the elderly woman left helpless on the ground.

The younger woman attempts to chase the thief but eventually returns to help the elderly woman. Disturbingly, no passersby intervene to assist them during the incident.

The old video was shared on an Instagram account named “Inflics” with the caption “Karachi,” quickly gaining over a thousand likes within two hours.

However, a fact-check conducted by Aaj News using reverse image search revealed that the incident actually occurred in Lahore almost two years ago.

The timing of the video’s resurfacing with a false Karachi label coincides with a period of heightened concerns over street crime in the city. Numerous incidents of street crime are being reported daily, creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.

Express News had originally reported on the incident on November 10, 2022, detailing that it took place in Lahore’s Iqbal Town area. The robber had forcefully snatched a purse containing one lakh rupees from the victim, identified as Naveed. The SP of Iqbal Town had subsequently directed the SHO to apprehend the culprit.
