Lahore court sentences man to prison for remarrying without first wife’s consent

The husband also directed to pay Rs500,000 fine

A Family Court in Lahore handed a seven-month sentence and a Rs500,000 fine to a man for trying to remarry without the permission of his first wife.

Judge Adnan Liaquat announced the verdict on a case filed by the wife of the man identified as Muhammad Aurangzeb.

Barrister Usmanji Rashid Cheema represented the petitioner in the case where the court found the man guilty of the charge.

In the verdict, Judge Liaquat said that the husband violated the law which required him to ask for consent from his first wife for remarrying.

The accused was not permitted to remarry without the consent of the first wife and was found in violation of Section 6 (5) of the Muslim Family Law Ordinance, the court’s judgement read.

Consequently, the court handed Aurangzeb a seven-month jail sentence and a Rs500,000 fine.
