PTI leader Moonis Elahi fears disappearance on returning home
PTI leader Moonis Elahi has expressed his fear that he might be “disappeared” on returning home from Spain’s Barcelona.
“I am willing to return home tomorrow, but there should be a guarantee that I will not disappear,” he said in an interview with DW News that was uploaded on Friday night. “If I am shown visible… There is no issue with FIA, NAB, police, and the anti-corruption.”
He was asked about running away from the country instead of facing court cases.
Moonis left the country in 2022 after the crackdown on the PTI post-May 9 events. He faces multiple cases of corruption and money laundering registered against him by the Federal Investigation Agency, the Anti-Corruption Establishment and the National Accountability Bureau.
His father and former Punjab chief minister Pervez Elahi is behind bars. Moonis has slammed the government for a crackdown on the PTI and the “treatment” given to PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif upon his return to the country last year.
When asked about the trust in the judiciary amidst the recent court decisions, the PTI leader said that he believed in the judiciary but spoke about the multiple arrests of his father despite getting bail from the court.
“Imran Khan never wanted to have a bad relationship with the establishment. He used to say ’This is my army and why would I want to fight with them,” he said.
The former water resources minister shared that he was willing to improve relations with the army, saying that “good people” present on both sides want matters to be settled.
Moonis claimed that the whole system was trying to have a PML-N government after the elections.
He added that there was no issue with the arrest, saying that NAB registered a case against him when he was outside the country in 2011.
The problem was that people were disappeared, he added.
When asked about a guarantee, he replied that a guarantee—given by guarantors.
