At least five crewmembers were found dead on the Coast Guard plane involved in a crash at the Japanese airport on Tuesday, the East Asian country’s NHK TV reported while quoting Tokyo police.

“The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department says five crew members are dead and the pilot is severely injured,” the public broadcaster said.

A Japan Airlines aircraft was engulfed in flames at Tokyo’s Haneda airport on Tuesday after a possible collision with a Coast Guard aircraft, with the airline saying that all 379 passengers and crew had been evacuated.

Live footage on public broadcaster NHK showed the aircraft erupt in flames as it skidded down the tarmac and fire crews feverishly tried to extinguish the fire.

The Coast Guard said it was investigating the possibility that one of its aircraft collided with the passenger jet.

A spokesperson at Japan Airlines said the aircraft had departed from Shin-Chitose airport in Hokkaido.

Japan Airlines said that the plane was Flight 516 from New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport.

The airline official said that all 379 passengers and crew evacuated safely. A Japan Coast Guard official said that six crewmembers were on board the other plane. It was preparing to fly to Niigata for earthquake relief.
