Sindh’s caretaker Minister of Culture and Sports Dr Junaid Ali Shah has said that the Culture, Tourism & Antiquities Department of Sindh discovered the whereabouts of the historic Kot Diji Fort’s lost six cannons.

The 300-year-old cannons went missing 30 years ago from the historic fort situated in Sindh’s Khairpur district.

According to Shah, two out of the six cannons were found at Khairpur Police Lines and have been recovered by the culture department on Tuesday.

A couple of cannons are placed at the deputy commissioner’s office in Khairpur; one is at Maryam Chowk while another is at Babarloi police station, he said.

The provincial minister said that the department has sought the help of the police and administration to hand over the historic cannons to the department.

Shah said that the absence of the cannons was affecting the historic status of the fort.

Khairpur district has several historical sites and monuments. The fort of Kot Diji is one of them.

The former ruler of Khairpur state Mir Sohrab Khan Talpur founded three forts to safeguard the frontiers of his rule including “Shah Garh”, towards Jodhpur - Jaisalmer, “Imam Garh” in the Thar region and “Qilla Ahmedabad” in the capital town of Kot Diji.

The fort was solely designed and built for defence purposes. It was well equipped to offer foolproof security and encounter any invasion.

Besides the commander’s house it contained inside the supporting bastions, watch towers, ammunition depot, Mir’s Haram, Pavilion for holding Darbar or court, and cells or Barracks soldiers rank-wise.
