President Arif Alvi has said that the constitution does not allow the president to take administrative measures but he is sure that the elections will be held on February 8.

The president has also said that it is the responsibility of the caretaker government and the Election Commission to provide a level playing field.

While giving a special interview to the American broadcaster ‘Voice of America’, President Dr Arif Alvi said that the judiciary, administration and political leaders are in agreement on the timely holding of elections and there is no doubt that the elections should not be held on February 8.

President Arif Alvi said that providing a level playing field is the responsibility of the caretaker government and the Election Commission.

Arif Alvi said that he was not the spokesperson of any political party, but of every Pakistani. “Wherever I see problems, I will continue to point them out,” he said.

The President further said that the decision of PTI chairman’s participation in the election is in the court.

He also said that he had condemned the May 9 violence but that the government should also create conducive environment for political parties. “Yes, I do not believe in the politics of violence, but governments should also not create such conditions that protests turn violent.”

President Arif Alvi said that the decision to send back illegal refugees to their countries is an appropriate move, because the economy is no longer able to bear the burden of refugees.

The Afghan Taliban failed to stop infiltration and despite repeated assurances action against TTP was not taken, he said.

Alvi said the COAS had told him that evidence of TTP involvement in terror attacks was shared with the Afghan Taliban. There is no lack of communication with Kabul, but the Taliban should take practical measures, he said.

The President said that if Nawaz Sharif is elected prime minister of the country, he will fulfill the requirement administering oath to him.

If the administration and the establishment work together, the problems can be solved, he said.
