More than one million people have fled their homes in Gaza in scenes of chaos and despair as Israel bombarded the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip and continued amassing troops Monday in preparation for a full-blown ground invasion.

Here are the updates

  • More than 1,000 Palestinians missing under the rubble of buildings destroyed by Israeli air attacks on Gaza, rescuers say.
  • In Gaza, hospitals are becoming overwhelmed with increasing numbers of dead and injured. Health officials on Sunday said some 9,600 people have been wounded.
  • The UN said Monday that 47 entire families, amounting to around 500 people, have been wiped out in Israel’s bombing campaign. Foreign governments and aid agencies, including the UN and Red Cross, have repeatedly criticised Israel’s evacuation order.
  • Israel has deployed thousands of troops, tanks, and weaponry along the border fence with Gaza amid expectations it will soon begin a ground invasion of Gaza.

Diplomatic efforts

  • US Secretary of State Antony Blinken returns to Israel to talk “about the way forward” after several days of shuttle diplomacy in the region.
  • France’s FM is in Lebanon for talks on the need to contain violence and stop Lebanon from getting involved.
  • Jordan’s King Abdullah will meet the German president in Berlin.
  • Russia has requested a UN Security Council meeting for debate and a vote after it circulated a draft resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
  • Japan is sending a special envoy to the Middle East to mediate a solution to the current conflict.
  • China prepared on Monday to host representatives of 130 countries for a forum that will be overshadowed by the Israel-Gaza war, as an increasingly assertive Beijing is asked to help de-escalate the violence.
  • United States President Joe Biden has warned Israel that any occupation of Gaza would be a “big mistake”. Speaking in an interview on US television, Biden said he supported the creation of a humanitarian corridor for people in Gaza to leave and aid to be delivered.

Reactions

  • An Illinois man was charged with hate crimes for stabbing a 6-year-old Muslim boy to death and wounding his mother in an attack that targeted them for their religion and as a response to the war between Israel and Hamas, officials and Muslim rights activists said on Sunday.
