The Islamabad High Court has suspended the three-year sentence of PTI chief Imran Khan in the Toshakhana criminal case and ordered his release. Khan would be free if he is not arrested in other cases just like his other party leaders.

It merits here to mention that Khan’s punishment was not limited to three years but he was also barred from contesting general elections.

A two-member bench of the Islamabad High Court has suspended PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s three-year sentence in the Toshakhana criminal case.

The court announced its reserved verdict on the petition on Tuesday, seeking the suspension of a three-year prison sentence of the former prime minister.

An end to his disqualification would be the biggest advantage to the former prime minister.

Shaukat Piracha of Aaj News said that Khan will be able to contest elections as his disqualification was conditioned with his sentence. Although the former PM’s sentence has been suspended, it is unlikely he will be released as he is facing multiple charges, he added.

On the other hand, it has been said that Khan will remain disqualified from contesting election and holding office as his sentence has been suspended while his conviction remains in place.

Bureau chief of Aaj News Islamabad, Tariq Chaudhary said that the PTI chief has been given a relief from the High Court but has not been evicted in the Toshakhana criminal case.

According to the Constitution, the upper courts can suspend sentence of three-years or lower period at any time, however, the case continues, he added.
