The Chinese foreign ministry has said that any attempt to sabotage the bilateral relations with Pakistan and the progress of a multi-billion dollar project would not succeed—a day after a military convoy was attacked in Balochistan’s Gwadar.

“No attempt to sabotage the friendship with Pakistan and the development of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor will not succeed,” Wang Wenbin said at a regular press briefing on Monday. “China will continue to work with Pakistan to jointly guard against and counter the threats of terrorism.”

He was responding to a query pertaining to whether there were any Chinese casualties in the attack.

Pakistan army thwarted a terrorist attack on Sunday in the port city. At least two terrorists were killed in the attack. In the wake of the attack, the Chinese embassy urged the Pakistani authorities to conduct an investigation and punish the perpetrators.

On August 13, Wenbin said a convoy from a Chinese project at the Gwadar Port was hit by roadside bombs and gunshots, and no Chinese citizens were killed or injured.

China condemned the terrorist act and asked the Pakistani authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice and take action to keep Chinese nationals safe.

The foreign ministry spokesperson added that the Chinese embassy and consulate in Pakistan immediately activated the emergency response mechanism and reminded Chinese nationals, companies and project construction teams in Pakistan to stay alert, upgrade security measures, closely follow the security situation on the ground, guard against security risks, and keep themselves safe.

“China will effectively protect the safety of Chinese personnel, institutions and projects in Pakistan,” Wenbin said.
