Sherry for continuity of policy as govt moves to amend Election Act
Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman has stressed the need for continuity of policy as the ruling coalition moves to amend the Election Act, 2017, expanding the powers of the interim government.
“This is my personal view and many people are thinking on it that we lose these three months because I have seen this, even when I was the ambassador,” she said on Aaj News show Faisla Aap Ka on Tuesday.
Sherry was responding to a query on the reports, which her party has denied as “fake news”, that Finance Minister Ishaq Dar was the first choice for the interim prime minister slot.
Though the PPP—one of the major political parties in the ruling coalition—has neither supported nor opposed Dar’s name, the Sindh-ruling party has maintained that no name has been finalised. There were mixed reports on the party’s reaction to the finance czar’s candidacy.
“No one is ready to take it seriously,” Sherry said as she spoke about the interim setup. The PPP leader called for continuity of policies in order to sign the intended agreements. She added that no one gives much importance to a caretaker setup due to its short stint.
She claimed that the finance czar’s name was shared with them in meetings on the interim PM and added that every party’s views were important for it.
According to the PPP leader, consultation was under way on the interim prime minister. She added that every party has their own preferences on the appointment for the coveted slot.
When asked about the proposed amendment to the Election Act and a few PPP leaders’ objections to it, she said that Raza Rabbani was a senior leader and that his views should be given importance.
“I think that there has been mismanagement in matters related to Senate and administration level,” Sherry said and stressed the need for consulting senior leaders before presenting such a bill in Parliament.
She was of the view that it was the “beauty of democracy” to have a discussion on the bill rather than bulldoze it.
She reiterated the elections should be held on time.
When asked about climate change, Sherry spoke about its impact on Pakistan and efforts made at the international stage to put up the country’s case.
She highlighted that the Sindh government was giving land titles to the people in their rehabilitation and rebuilding efforts. It was not available before and this time the titles were given to women.
The climate change minister was of the view that every province should adopt it.
She added that the Council of Common Interests decision on the census was complex.
