Safety central to free and fair elections in Pakistan, says US

Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs tweets on fifth-year anniversary of attack at polling station in Quetta

Safety was central to free and fair elections in Pakistan, the United States’ Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs said on Tuesday.

“We support Pakistan’s peaceful upholding of fundamental democratic principles,” it tweeted on the fifth-year anniversary of the ISIS attack at a polling station in Quetta.

“We stand with the people of Pakistan in mourning the lives lost.”

The suicide bombing killed at least 31 people and injured another 70. Despite the violence, news outlets reported that millions of Pakistanis showed up to cast their vote.

As mentioned by many people, the year 2023 is the election year of Pakistan when a new government would come to power.

The incumbent government, which is ruled by a coalition of many parties, is expected to dissolve assemblies next month. It will pave the way for the interim setup.
