Babar Azam-led Pakistan have become the number one ranked ODI team in the world after their convincing 102-run victory over New Zealand on Friday in Karachi.

The hosts took a 4-0 lead in the ongoing five-match series being played at the National Bank Stadium.

This is Pakistan’s best-ever ratings since the introduction of the ICC official ODI ranking system in 2005. Their previous best was 3rd position, which they achieved in 2007.

Pakistan were fifth in the ODI rankings before the series against New Zealand started with a rating of 106 but jumped to the first position after winning four consecutive games against the Kiwis. The visitors were in second position before the series.

However, to remain on top, Pakistan will have to ensure a clean sweep, winning the fifth and final ODI on Sunday, 7 May. A loss in the final ODI will see them slipping back to No.3 and Australia reclaiming their No.1 ranking.

Pakistan will also remain on top if they win the fourth ODI and the fifth match is abandoned or yields a no-result.

Earlier, Babar Azam produced a master class with the bat, while Usama Mir cashed in on the skipper’s brilliance as Pakistan won the fourth ODI.

After posting a 335-run target, the Men in Green bowled the visitors out for 232 in 43.4 overs with Mir bagging four wickets.
