Parliamentary committee formed to consider increasing ECP’s powers

ECP had asked the parliament to amend the act

Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani and National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf formed a committee on Wednesday to look into increasing the election commission’s powers.

The ECP had written a letter to the parliament on April 10 asking that the Election Act’s sections 57 and 58 be amended to empower the institution with the sole powers to decide when elections should be held.

The committee will include the following members:

  1. Senator Syed Ali Zafar
  2. Senator Kamran Murtaza
  3. Senator Taj Haider
  4. Senator Dilawar Khan
  5. Dr. Muhammad Afzal Khan Dhandla, MNA
  6. Syed Naveed Qamar, MNA
  7. Mr. Mohsin Nawaz Ranjha, MNA
  8. Engr. Sabir Hussain Kaim Khani, MNA
  9. Minister for Law & Justice
  10. Minister for Parliamentary Affairs

The notification for the committee says that it will “examine the amendments proposed by the Election Commission of Pakista.”

The committee will meet on April 14 and has been asked to present amendments to the act within 10 days.
