Woman or driver: Islamabad bomber’s companion remains a mystery

It is clear two people were in the vehicle that exploded, but who was with the bomber?

Investigation into Friday’s suicide bombing have revealed the bomber’s route, the amount of explosives and possible targets. But one question has still not been answered clearly: who was accompanying the bomber?

The attack in Islamabad’s I-10/4 area took the life of atleast one policeman, while injuring atleast five others.

Immediate reports after the attack confirmed that there were two people in the vehicle that exploded when being confronted by a police checkpost in Islamabad. Police said that the bomber had been asked to exit the vehicle for a screening, and the attack happened after he sat in the car again. It has now been confirmed that the attack was indeed a suicide bombing.

DIG Sohail Chattha said that the person accompanying the bomber was a woman, when he visited the site of the bombing in the immediate aftermath of the attack. But sources told Aaj News that the presence of a woman in the vehicle has still not been confirmed.

Even as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan accepted responsibility for the attack, their statement only mentioned one attacker. Although a second body has been transferred to PIMS hospital in Islamabad, the mutilated remains have not yet been identified.

Now, speculation is rife that the other passenger might have been the driver of the vehicle. The vehicle itself is a yellow taxi of 1989 model, and was registered in Lahore with number LEI 7793. It was last registered to a resident of Chakwal named Sajid.

It has been established with certainty that the vehicle was rented by the bomber. Sources say that investigation agencies have tracked down the son of the person driving the vehicle, so some sort of breakthrough is to be expected soon.
