Pak-Afghan border crossing at Chaman has been reopened for trade and cross-border movement of people after successful negotiations between Pakistan and Afghanistan forces.

According to Deputy Commissioner Chaman Abdul Hameed Zahri, the border was temporarily closed after firing and shelling from the neighboring country.

Earlier the Afghan Border Forces opened “unprovoked and indiscriminate fire” on the civilian population in Balochistan’s Chaman district that killed at least eight people and injured 20 others.

“Afghan Border Forces opened unprovoked and indiscriminate fire of heavy weapons including artillery/mortar onto the civilian population in Chaman, Balochistan,” the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Afghan official Noor Ahmad, in Kandahar, the province on the Afghan side of the border, told Reuters the incident was accidental and the situation had returned to normal after the two sides had a meeting.

The Chaman border was closed for trade and movement of people following the incident.

However, after the successful negotiations between the forces from both sides, the deputy commissioner said that the Pak-Afghan border will remain open for all types of traffic tomorrow as usual.
