Rangers called in after PTI protesters block road near Islamabad airport

ISLAMABAD: The road leading to Islamabad from the New Islamabad International Airport was closed on Monday after PTI supporters took to the streets against the assassination attempt on Imran Khan.

The PTI supporters staged a protest near the airport at the link road connecting the motorways M2 an M1 with Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

The capital police and Rangers personnel have left for the site in order to deal with the situation.

“A request has been sent to the federal government to issue instructions to the provincial governments under Article 3 and 4 of the Constitution that Motorway and the airport routes should be kept open. Cases will be registered against the evil elements in Noon police station. The public is also requested to report any suspicious activities and miscreants on call 15,” the Islamabad police said in a seires of tweets.

Protest on Murree Road

Earlier, supporters of PTI burned tyres and blocked one of the tracks of Murree Road at Shamsabad in Rawalpindi.

The police had to create a diversion and redirected the traffic to Islamabad Expressway. The protest later ended.

Pervez Khattak, in an interview with a private news channel, had said that his party would block the entry and exit points of Islamabad today (Monday), prompting the capital city police to tighten the security.

“Due to protest, diversions [were] placed for traffic at Murree Road before Faizabad. Alternatively, Islamabad Expressway can be used,” the Islamabad police said in a tweet.

Protest on GT Road

The road has been blocked on both sides in Gulzar-e-Quaid due to protests being held on Old Airport Road, while at GT Road in Taxila, there is a traffic jam on both sides at Margalla Chowk due to protests.

GT Road has been closed on both sides due to PTI’s protest and sit-in near Rawat.
