Did the WhatsApp outage blow out your job too?
The worldwide outage of WhatsApp affected the work of millions of people around the world on Tuesday. Last year, when WhatsApp services were down for six hours, people lost their jobs.
At the time, the leading tech website The Verge reported how daily wage earners in Brazil lost their jobs. These workers, providing household services such as cleaning, used to WhatsApp their prospective clients to ask if their services were required for that day. If the customer would confirm, they would go to work. The six-hour shutdown of WhatsApp cost them two days of work.
Such a situation is the result of over-reliance on WhatsApp. People have abandoned traditional means of communication. For example, people avoid recharging their mobile phone SIM card, opting instead to use the free call and messaging service of WhatsApp.
On Tuesday, WhatsApp services were suspended in Pakistan for roughly two hours from 12 noon to 2pm.
Are you one of the million of the people who were affected by the outage? Did it hurt your work or output? Are you thinking of reverting to traditional methods of communication?
