Former finance minister Ishaq Dar was sworn in as senator on Tuesday. He was elected as senator in 2018 elections while he was in exile.

Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani administered the oath of office to him amid protests from the PTI lawmakers. The treasury bench MPs congratulated Dar on becoming the senator.

The PML-N leader landed in Pakistan along with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday after spending five years in a self-imposed exile.

Earlier in the day, Dar skipped the hearing of the case in the Islamabad accountability court as he was required to do under a court order, following his return to home country.

The accountability court had suspended Dar’s arrest warrants last week and told him to ‘surrender’ before the court before October 7. The decision allowed Dar to return to the country without the fear of being arrested at the airport.

Later, Finance Minister Miftah Ismail officially tendered his resignation to the government. He announced the decision on September 25 in tweet after meeting party supremo Nawaz Sharif.

Miftah took the helm of state affairs when the coalition government came to power after former prime minister Imran Khan was ousted in a vote of confidence.
