In tit-for-tat, PTI vows action against PML-N in Punjab after Gill’s arrest
LAHORE: Following the news about the arrest of PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s chief of staff Shahbaz Gill in Islamabad earlier today, the PTI-led government in Punjab has decided to arrest those responsible for the ‘May 25’ incident in which scores of PTI workers were injured in Lahore following clashes with police.
Omar Sarfraz Cheema, the former Punjab governor who is an adviser to PTI-backed Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, told Aaj News on Tuesday that the decision to take action against those involved in the ‘illegal’ arrest of PTI workers had been taken earlier.
“After today’s incident (involving Shahbaz Gill), we have decided to arrest all those involved in the May 25 incident,” Omar Sarfraz Cheema said.
When asked whether action would be taken against PML-N leaders including current Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and the Punjab home minister at that time Attaullah Tarrar, he said that “all those involved in the unlawful terrorising” of protesters on May 25 would face action.
During the May 25 protest, police in Lahore used tear gas and baton-charge to disperse PTI protesters marching towards Islamabad for Azadi March. Former federal minister Hammad Azhar, who was leading the marchers, was left bloodied following clashes between marchers and police in the provincial capital. Dozens were injured while several PTI workers were also detained.
