PESHAWAR: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved an increase in the price of electricity by Rs3.99 per unit on account of fuel cost adjustment.

The increase, announced under the head of monthly fuel charge adjustment (FCA) for April, will apply to customers from June.

The Karachi-Electric and lifeline electricity consumers (those who use less than 200 units monthly) are exempted, according to the notification.

Nepra had reserved its decision till May 31 at the request of the Central Purchasing Agency.

Electricity shortfall has intensified in Pakistan as power crises has reached up to 7,000 megawatts.

The increasing value of the dollar, which breached the Rs204 mark for the first time in Pakistan inter-bank trading history, is also contributing to the increasing cost of energy production.
