If former first lady Bushra and former prime minister Imran Khan were given a Rolex or diamond necklace, details of these gifts deposited in the Toshakhana will now have to be made public.

The Islamabad High Court ordered the deputy attorney general on Wednesday to make these details public.

Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb ordered the government to make a policy that would ensure that all gifts from dignitaries and heads of state are deposited in the Toshakhana and are exhibited as it did not make sense to pay a certain amount for a gift and keep it.

The judge said that the country’s head is not only given gifts from other states but they also have to respond in kind and give gifts bought from money in the national exchequer.

The deputy attorney general asked for time to implement the new directions. The court granted him two weeks.

Meanwhile, Justice Aurangzeb directed the deputy attorney general to follow directions from the Pakistan Information Commission and provide details of the gifts to the people.

Journalist Rana Abrar Khalid had filed the petition, naming the Cabinet Division, and saying that the Information Commission of Pakistan had been directed to provide details of the Toshakhana but had not.

The petitioner said that the commission refused to provide details.

The former PTI-led government’s refusal to make public the list of gifts received by ex-prime minister Imran Khan caused a controversy.

After assuming office, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif accused the PTI chairperson and former premier of selling gifts received during foreign visits.
