Omar Sarfaraz Cheema removed as governor Punjab
The Governor of Punjab Omar Sarfraz Cheema was removed from the office, Aaj news reported on Sunday.
Earlier Punjab Governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema postponed the swearing-in ceremony of newly-elected Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz and he also held consultations with the constitutional team.
According to Aaj News, Cheema also reacted after being removed from Governor Punjab's office, saying that only the President of Pakistan has the power to remove him from office. "I will remain in office till the President denotifies me."
Cheema had also postponed the swearing-in ceremony of newly-elected Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shahbaz.
He said that in the light of the report of the Secretary Punjab Assembly, "I would not take any unconstitutional step," adding that the oath taking ceremony couldn' be held till the opinion on the report of yesterday’s incident, "therefore it has been postponed."
He said that he decided to send the constitutional recommendations to the President. In this regard, Cheema had also consulted Speaker Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and former Chief Minister Usman Buzdar.
Earlier in the day, Cheema visited PML-Q leader Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi at his residence in Lahore and condemned the attack on the latter in the Punjab Assembly yesterday.
Speaking about the yesterday’s incident of commotion in the Punjab Assembly, he criticized the Deputy Speaker and explained that goons were called into the session to create a chaotic situation in the assembly.
He said that the Secretary Punjab Assembly has submitted a report on the commotion, adding that he would decide to take oath from Hamza Shahbaz only after reviewing the report and consulting constitutional experts.
It is worth mentioning that earlier before the no-confidence motion against the former prime minister Imran Khan, the PTI-led government had removed Chaudhry Sarwar as Punjab governor and had appointed Omar Cheema in his place.
The governor was removed on the complaint of the Punjab Assembly Speaker Pervaiz Elahi.
Elahi had accused Sarwar of siding with the Aleem Khan group – that was supporting PML-N's Hamza Shehbaz against Elahi – in the election of the Punjab CM.
