PPP's Raja Pervaiz Ashraf elected speaker National Assembly unopposed
Former prime minister and Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) leader Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has been elected Speaker National Assembly unopposed.
His election came after National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser resigned from his position after the joint opposition submitted a no-confidence motion against former prime minister Imran Khan.
Earlier today, PPP senior leader emerged as the candidate of the joint opposition for the National Assembly speaker slot.
Ashraf on Friday morning after approval from the party had submitted his nomination papers to the assembly secretariat for the National Assembly speaker election.
According to the National Assembly Secretariat, notification regarding the election of Raja Pervez Ashraf as Speaker will be issued in accordance with the rules.
PTI's Asad Qaiser had stepped down from office on April 9. Qaiser, being a PTI leader and Imran Khan loyalist, delayed the session for holding vote of no-confidence motioin against the former premier Imran Khan, as much as he could before resigning minutes before midnight, as the Supreme Court's deadline for holding the vote was about to end.
