Chairperson PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Thursday tried to defend the case of dynastic politics in Pakistan during an interview with CNN’s Becky Anderson. Bilawal’s argument, in which he used the example of the Clinton family of the United States, was found to be highly unconvincing by many social media users.

The video clip went viral on the internet after Anderson posted the interview on her Twitter profile.

“Sharif is a brother of former deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif, you yourself are part of Pakistan’s leading political parties and the son of a former prime minister and a president. Would someone say that is what is wrong with Pakistani politics, the sort of dynasty family politics, right or wrong?” asked the anchorperson.

“Absolutely dynasties exist. I think it would be unfair to criticise former secretary of state and presidential candidate, Hilary Clinton, for being involved in politics because her husband was involved in politics,” answered Bilawal.

The PPP chairperson was interrupted by Anderson who said, “no, no, no, that is not a good answer, it was a really important question.” An unnerved Bilawal further tries to back his argument, stating that one could criticise nepotism but “ultimately who the people decide they want, that is what matters.”

Speaking about how he ended up in Pakistani politics, Bilawal said, “As far as I am concerned, my grandfather was hanged by a military dictator, my mother was assassinated by terrorists, and I was forced into Pakistan’s politics at a young age. I didn’t choose this life. It chose me.”

Drawing an end to his argument, Bilawal concluded, “But for whatever reason one is doing politics, we believe that the democracy and the people should decide.”

The Pakistani Twitterati is not happy with how “ill-prepared” the PPP leader was for the interview.

Some thought the interview was “embarrassing.”

One person said this blunder on international media has affected “Bilawal’s image-building campaign.”
