"No justice here": Nazim Jokhio's widow pardons PPP lawmakers, others
Shireen Jokhio, the widow of slain Nazim Jokhio, has said that she will no longer seek justice for the murder of her husband, whose body was found at a farmhouse - owned by a PPP Jam Awais - on the outskirts of Karachi. The lawmaker as well as his brother, MNA Jam Abdul Karim and others have been charge sheeted by the police in the case.
In the video message, shared widely by journalists and activists on social media, Jokhio said that she had not taken any money or reached a compromise with teh accused party. "I am withdrawing from the case because I have been abandoned by those who are mine. I have been left alone."
Nazim Jokhio, a local journalist, was allegedly tortured to death at the farmhouse of the accused PPP MPA Jam Awais Bijar for trying to prevent his foreign guests from illegal hunting of endangered houbara bustard.
"Those who have children must be able to relate to my situation. I have two small children," she said in the video, continuing that circumstances had compelled her to stop the pursuit of justice. In an earlier petition, it was stated that Jokhio's wife and childrens' life was at stake, while asking for a protective detail and accusing the police and prosecutor general of delaying the charge sheet on one prextext on another.
"I have left the decision to Allah Almighty. I am grateful to all those who supported me. Through this video statement, I want to say that I cannot fight any more," she said.
A trial court of Malir district in Karachi, which heard the case, referred it to the anti-terrorism court. However, the prosecutor general cited procedural issues on part of the investigation officer in filing the challan, and has since called for his removal.
After protests, MP Jam Awais along with several other members of his staff members charge sheeted in the case surrended to the police and were taken into custody. They were first sent for physical remand and then transferred to jail before the MPA was cleared by a statement of the vicitm's brother.
In the interim, Jokhio's wife accused the influential political family of trying to use coercion and money for an out-of-court settlement and stop her from pursuing the murder charge.
The court is yet to be taken up the anti-terrorism due to delays. However, MNA Jam Abdul Karim was granted protective bail by the Sindh High Court on Friday.
The PPP lawmaker, who is in Dubai, through his attorney moved the SHC seeking remedy to appear before the trial court. This would purtportely allow him to return to Pakistan and cast his vote in the no-confidence vote.
Meanwhile, statements coming from the interior ministry suggested that the absconder would be arrested upon arrival and his named placed on the exit-control list.
"There is no justice in Pakistan," says Shireen towards the end of the 2 minute 20 second long clip being shared on social media, citing not wanting to involve her self with the "court-kacheri" system in the country.
Legal expert Reema Omar called it "hameful and heartbreaking" while saying the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party was equally culpable for allowing the 'gross injustice'.
Activist and lawyer Jibran Nasir, while discussing the issue in a current affairs show, also blamed the provincial government for 'creating the circumstances' that compelled the widow to withdraw the case.
"Should we blame the poor widow or Bilawal Bhutto Zardari [the PPP party chief]?"
