At least five people were killed and six injured as heavy rains and strong winds battered different cities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, destroying roofs, uprooting trees as well as snapping electrical wires, late on Friday night, Aaj News reported.

In Mardan, three people died in separate incidents after the roof and walls of their houses collapsed, while a minor was killed in Landi Kotal.

Meanwhile, a man lost his life in Dir Pain, after a tree was uprooted by the wind and it fell on him.

At least six people – including three women – were injured when electricity wires fell on the road in Peshawar because of heavy rain.

Moreover, heavy rain and hail damaged crops in Peshawar.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Disaster Management Authority had predicted the extreme weather, with heavy winds, rain and hailstorms, from March 18 to 20, according to a notification issued on Friday.

“Wind and dust storm may cause damages to vulnerable structures, especially in Peshawar and other cities of the province on Friday and Saturday,” the authority said. Furthermore, it also said that extreme weather might damage standing crops and orchards in the province.

It requested the concerned authorities to take precautionary measures in order to avoid or at least minimise the loss of human lives and damage to property.

The PDMA also issued urged authorities to take safety measures.

This is not the first time that extreme weather in the country has led to calamities, with at least 22 people dying in their vehicles after their locomotives got stuck in the snow in Murree on January 8.
