KARACHI. Australian opener Usman Khawaja fell after a marathon 160 as Australia lost three wickets in the second session to be 407 for seven at tea on day two of the second test at the Karachi National Stadium of the three-match Benaud-Qadir ICC World Test Championship series against Pakistan on Sunday, as the tourists try to pounce on the hosts to lead the series with a victory.

Islamabad-born Khawaja added 33 runs to his overnight 127 to depart after a fine knock that included 15 boundaries and a six.

Alex Carey was batting on 26 at the tea break with Mitchell Starc giving company on one.

The second-day play of the game started with centurion Usman Khawaja and nightwatchman Nathan Lyon on the crease. The nightwatchman with the opener build a 50-run partnership and put pressure on the pacer duo -- Shaheen Shah Afridi and Hasan Ali, which started the day's spell for Pakistan.

Till the filing of this story, Khawaja was batting at 152 and Travis Head at 13. Pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi and Hasan Ali started the first spell of the day. Hasan joined his side on Saturday, completing the full test squad with Faheem Ashraf's inclusion, after recovering from an injury.

Nathan Lyon got out on the inswinging delivery of Faheem Ashraf, who returned to the side after testing negative for Covid-19. Lyon tried to flick the ball but it swung and rattled the stumps. Faheem got his second wicket after dismissing David Warner on a off stump delivery on day one of the test.

Day one

Usman Khawaja smashed his 11th Test hundred and forged a 159-run partnership with Steve Smith to power Australia to 251 for three on the opening day of the second Test against Pakistan on Saturday.

Islamabad-born Khawaja had fallen agonisingly short of a hundred in the opening Test in Rawalpindi where he top-scored for his side with a breezy 97.

The elegant left-hander made amends in Karachi where he shelved the reverse sweep and made an unbeaten 127, which included 13 fours and a six.

Smith made 72 before falling to Hasan Ali in the penultimate over of the day.

Nightwatchman Nathan Lyon had yet to open his account.
