Samaa TV journalist shot dead during Karachi robbery
Senior producer for Samaa TV Athar Mateen was shot dead during a robbery attempt in Karachi on Friday. He was 42.
Samaa TV's CEO Navied Siddiqui tweeted the news earlier in the day.
Samaa website reported that Mateen came across two men near the Five Star Chowrangi in North Karachi who were robbing a person at gunpoint as he was driving to work. He used his car to crash into the robbers' motorcycle but in retaliation the men opened fire on Mateen's car and fled.
He died and his body has been shifted to Abbasi Shaheed hospital.
Samaa website also reported that the area where Mateen was shot dead "is popular for muggings and robberies, specially early morning and late at night."
Mateen is survived by a widow and two daughters.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Saeed has asked Karachi’s additional IG to prepare an investigation report and vowed to arrest the perpetrators of the crime.
Many journalists took to Twitter to mourn his death.
Colleagues who worked with Mateen expressed their condolences on his death.
