FIA says it raided Mohsin Baig's home on PTI Murad Saeed's complaint
The Federal Investigation Agency's cyber crime wing and police arrested Daily Jinnah and Online news agency Editor Mohsin Jamil Baig on Wednesday after a raid on his house in Islamabad, the journalist's spokesperson said.
A heavy contingent of police surrounded the journalist's home in the morning and took Baig away as seen in videos widely circulated on social media.
During the raid, bitter words were exchanged between the journalists and FIA officials as well as the police as Baig asked for his arrest warrant. At the time, officials did not have any warrants and no case had been registered against the journalist, said Baig's spokesperson.
In the afternoon, the FIA issued a press release stating that a team of its cybercrime wing raided Baig’s house on the complaint of federal minister Murad Saeed lodged in Lahore's centre.
The agency’s department registered a first information report against the journalist under Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016’s Section 20 (Malicious code), 21-D (Cyber stalking) and 24 (Legal recognition of offences committed in relation to information system) and Pakistan Penal Code’s (PPC) Sections 500 (Punishment for Defamation) and 505 (Punishment for criminal intimidation).
According to the press release, the team acquired search and seize warrants from the court and then raided the journalist’s home in Islamabad’s Sector F-8. During the raid, Baig, along with his son and household workers, fired straight shots at the FIA team officials, held the two officials as hostages and harassed them.
The agency said it would release video of the incident, read the press release.
Baig was transferred to Islamabad’s Margalla police station where the proceedings were underway, it said.
The press release further said that Baig, along with his son and household workers, committed a "serious crime" by firings at the officials
Soon after news of Baig being picked up gained traction, images of the scuffle between Baig and the FIA officials were widely-circulated on social media, showing the journalist pointing gun at an official while grabbing another one from the other hand, with journalists questioning whether it was the real scene of Baig's arrest.
Journalist Roohan Ahmed shared a shaky video of the incident. Quoting police officials, Ahmed claimed that Baig didn't just resist the arrest but also shot and injured a policeman.
Ahmed quoted an FIA source and said Baig was arrested as federal minister Murad Saeed lodged a complaint against the journalist.
In a recent talk show aired on News One on February 11, Baig made a reference to Prime Minister Imran Khan's ex-wife Reham Khan's book, while the panel was discussing the performance of Federal Minister for Communication Murad Saeed. The panelists were discussing the premier's awarding of certificates to top ten ministries over their performance in which Saeed's ministry awarded the first rank.
Baig's reference to Reham's memoir was widely slammed by PTI supporters and several journalists who said it did not qualify as journalism.
Renowned journalist Hamid Mir shared pictures of Baig's house in the morning when the police and FIA officials surrounded his home in Islamabad.
In another tweet, Mir said: "Mohsin Baig was waiting for his arrest since long. His arrest is a sign of weakness not strength of Prime Minister Imran Khan."
