PM Imran attends Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Beijing

The event kicks off with around 2,900 athletes from more than 90 countries and regions

Prime Minister Imran Khan is attending the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing 2022 at China's National Stadium.

A delegation comprising over 20 ministers including Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin, Planning Minister Asad Umar, Information Minister Chaudhry Fawad Hussain, National Security Adviser Dr Moeed Yousaf, Commerce Adviser Abdul Razak Dawood and Special Assistant on China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Khalid Mansoor and other officials are accompanying the premier at the Olympics opening ceremony.

The event kicked off with around 2,900 athletes from more than 90 countries and regions participating in over 100 events.

Also known as the Bird’s Nest stadium, the venue of Olympics featured a show of ice-cool blue lasers as President Xi Jinping inaugurated the international sports event.

The athletes paraded at the opening ceremony including Muhammad Karim who would represent Pakistan in Alpine Skiing.

Prime Minister Imran Khan and his delegation arose from their seats to join the spectators for welcoming Pakistan’s squad passing through the venue waving the national flag.

Starting from February 4, the games would continue till February 20.

The athletes made their way into the stadium through a spectacular entrance which has been described as “Gate of China” and “Window of China.”

The ‘Gate of China’ symbolizes that China opens its doors to welcome the world to the Olympic Winter Games.

Earlier In a statement issued on Twitter, Fawad said that the purpose of PM Khan's visit to China is to represent Pakistan in the Beijing Winter Olympics and convey goodwill gesture at its opening ceremony on Pakistan's behalf.

Earlier in the day the Prime Minister attended a virtual meeting with China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) Chairman He Lifeng in Beijing and discussed the progress of ongoing CPEC projects and the preparations for future initiatives.
