India police arrest man for rape threats to Virat Kohli’s daughter
Mumbai police arrested 23-year-old Ramnagesh Srinivas Akubathini on Wednesday for posting rape threats to Indian cricketer Virat Kohli and actress Anushka Sharma’s 10 months old daughter.
The suspect, who belongs to Hyderabad, is facing multiple charges including sexual harassment, criminal intimidation, defamation and publishing obscene material. According to reports, he works at a software department of a food delivery company.
Indian cricketers received great online hate and trolling following their first World Cup defeat to Pakistan in the Twenty20 opening match on October 24. Players were subjected to abuse on social media, especially Mohammad Shami a Muslim Indian cricketer who was called a “traitor” and Indian cricket fans demanded that he “should be thrown out of the Indian team.”
Kohli condemned the social media abuse of his teammate and said, “There's a good reason why we are playing on the field and not some bunch of spineless people on social media that have no courage to actually speak to any individual in person.” He also said that attacking someone over their religion is the most “pathetic” thing anyone can do.
Although Kohli received support for his statement, the news of the rape threat to his daughter caused shock and outrage. Many said the tweet came from Pakistan, which was disproved with Akubathini's arrest.
Following the arrest of Akubathini, social media flooded with messages appreciating the Mumbai police.
Actor and producer Farhan Akhtar took to Twitter and said, “I’m really glad to hear the Mumbai Police cyber cell have located and arrested the creep who tweeted rape threats to a child.” He also said that he’s hoping the same would happen in the case of female journalists who receive rape threats on a daily basis.
