The federal government has appointed Shaukat Tarin as adviser to Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday after the expiry of his six-month tenure as finance minister, according to an Aaj News report.

According to a notification issued by the government, the position of Tarin was equivalent to finance minister.

It is pertinent to mention that Tarin continued attending International Monetary Fund talks in Washington for another tranche of $1 billion loan from the international lending body after the expiry of his position as the federal minister on Saturday.

A non-elected member can be a federal minister for a period of six months, according to clause 9 of Article 91 of the Constitution. However, he has to be elected as a member of the National Assembly or Senate to continue working as a minister otherwise he is not eligible to be a cabinet member.

"A minister who for any period of six consecutive months is not a member of the National Assembly shall, at the expiration of that period , cease to be a minister and shall not before the dissolution of that assembly be again appointed a minister unless he is elected a member of that assembly. Provided that nothing contained in this clause shall apply to a minister who is member of the Senate," read clause 9 of Article 91.

Prior to Tarin, Hafeez Shaikh also worked as an unelected finance minister of the country. However, he failed to continue working on the position after Pakistan Peoples Party leader Yusuf Raza Gillani defeated him in Senate elections held in March.
