Pakistanis are observing the second year anniversary of India's military siege of Jammu and Kashmir known as You e Istehsal.

Two years ago on this day, the Modi government scrapped the special constitutional status of Kashmir, a move condemned by the Pakistan government.

People are marking Youm e Istehsal to express their solidarity with oppressed Kashmiris.

The nation will mark a minute silence across the country and sirens will also be played.

Rallies have also been planned including one in Islamabad which was led by President Arif Alvi.

"Pakistan will liberate occupied Kashmir," he said at the event. "Let me warn India that Pakistan is a strong nation," he added.

He also used the occasion to remind people of the difference between the statuses accorded to Kashmir in Pakistan and India, with the former being independent in its governance and the latter being suppressed.

Prime Minister Imran Khan issued a statement on the occasion urging the world to take note of the atrocities committed in Kashmir.

"India's illegal and unilateral actions of August 5, 2019 and subsequent measures particularly pertaining to domicile rules and the land ownership laws are aimed at changing the demographic structure of IIOJK and converting the Kashmiris into a minority in their own land," he said.

He vowed to continue supporting Kashmiris right to self determination as accorded to them by the UN.

In related news, social media users took to Twitter to denounce this day as a black day. One particular poster in Islamabad depicting Modi as the devil was widely shared.

Meanwhile in India, social media users celebrated the day where Modi abrogated Article 370 of the Constitution two years ago, saying the government had fulfilled a dream of "Ek Vidhan-Ek Samvidhan", a phrase which means one country, one law, one flag.

Many Indian politicians believe the Article 370 paved the way for separatism in Kashmir and its abolishing will allow development to take place.
