The Election Commission of Pakistan on Thursday served a show-cause notice on chairman of PTI, Prime Minister Imran Khan, for not holding intra-party elections as required.

It has asked Khan to explain why elections were not held on June 13 this year, as required by the Election Act of 2017. It requires parties to hold intra-party elections within three to four years, before five years.

Khan has to reply within 14 days, the ECP said, otherwise they shall take further action within the law.

The ECP requires political parties to conduct intra-party elections before every five years, and the parties can hold the polls in three or four years as enshrined in their respective constitutions.

A political party has to submit a certificate signed by an office-bearer of the party saying the elections were held as mandated by the Elections Act.

The PTI did not provide the information.

The ECP has also issued show-cause notices to Balochistan Awami Party as well as the banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan for not holding intra-party elections.
