Police books Mufti Azizur Rehman for molesting teenage student
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam - Fazal (JUI-F) leader and former Jamia Asad ul Farooq cleric Mufti Aziz-Ur-Rehman has been booked by the Punjab police after a video clip which shows him reportedly molesting a student went viral on social media on Tuesday.
According to the details, First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against Aziz-Ur-Rehman at police station North Cantt, Lahore on behalf of S*, a student at Jamia Manzoor-ul-Islam. FIR has been registered under sections 377 (unnatural offences) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of Pakistan's Penal Code.
According to the FIR, the complainant claims the 70-year-old cleric blackmailed him after falsely accusing him of cheating in an exam, and forced himself onto the young man.
Furthermore, the student said that he got admission to the Jamia Manzoorul Islamia in 2013. Mufti Aziz asked the victim to have sexual relations with him while threatening to terminate him from seminary. S* said in the FIR that he had been abused by the cleric for three years.
The complainant added that he had informed the administration about the incident but they dismissed his complaint without looking into it.
The victim also mentioned he is receiving threats from Aziz's sons since he "exposed" the cleric. The victim claims he was chased outside the seminary by a stranger who also hurled threats at him.
Mufti Aziz-Ur-Rehman in a video statement has admitted to having physical relations with the young student, but claims it was consensual. Aziz added that the video is old and is being intentionally used to defame him.
Social media demands justice for the student:
As soon as the video of Aziz went viral on Twitter, social media users demanded immediate justice for the student.
Journalist Tahreem Azeem, in a tweet, said the cleric abused his position as a teacher.
"According to the FIR, the mufti has been sexually abusing the victim for three years. Imagine. He had authority and power. He imposed a few restrictions on the student affecting his career, told him he can lift those off only if he agrees to fulfill his demand."
Journalist Mawish Moulvi called for a strict punishment for Mufti Aziz. Taking to Twitter, she wrote:
"Be it a mufti a priest a doctor a lawyer a man of any race religion or profession it has nothing to do with his crime. He must be punished as per the law. #muftiazizurrehman needs to be given the worst possible punishment for the heinous crime of sexually abusing students."
Social media user Bee noted that sexual exploitation of seminary students has become endemic in Pakistan:
"It's not the first time and it won't be the last time. These mullahs are doing this stuff since decades and no one took action. It will happen again and nothing can stop it because they are hiding behind religion. More power to guy who recorded the video. #muftiazizurrehman"
