Quite often you stumble upon a point in your life where you feel awful about yourself. You don't know the reason, you don't know what underlying phenomenon is causing this chaos but you choose to blame yourself for everything.

Sigmund Freud, a renowned psychologist often acknowledged as the father of modern psychology called that a defense mechanism which we use against our insecurities, which is self-damning in this case.

The hidden underlying cause of it is usually a toxic relationship. Quite often that toxic relationship is harboring a narcissist on one hand and a victim on the other hand. In that scenario, the six most telling signs to spot that you are involved with a narcissist are given below.

But first, you should know the definition of a narcissist. The term refers to a type of personality disorder in which a person has an inflated sense of their importance, a profound desire for excessive attention and admiration, troubled relationships, and a lack of empathy for others.

1) They are hypocrites

It is said that by nature a human is a narcissist because as a child we think that the world revolves around us but as we grow up we get comfortable with empathy and kindness but these people, who we call narcissists, never develop these emotions. They continue to believe that the world revolves around them. So, a narcissist will appear late at a party but he will be furious if you arrive late. In a nutshell, the rules for you will be strict but it will always be justifiable if they did the same.

2) They won't let you shine

A narcissist lives in an illusion of grandiosity, so if someone goes ahead of them, they will feel threatened. Their instinctual reaction will be to belittle you, ignore you, or even worse, they will start talking about their achievements in response to your success.

3) They love to talk about themselves

If you are in a relationship where you feel like your partner is emotionally unavailable then that's your first indicator. The second indicator is to see if they are only occupied with themselves. A narcissist is self-obsessed. The notion or idea which defies them is unnegotiable to them.

4) They will never take the blame

Khaled Hosseini wrote in his book, "Like a compass facing north, a man’s accusing finger always finds a woman." Much like that, a narcissist will always blame you even for his actions.

5) They present themselves quite good

It's one of the greatest deceptions which makes it hard to identify a narcissist. They present themselves in such a good way to everyone, they will talk themselves up and with conviction. People often get carried away by them.

6) They are manipulative

That's the thing about narcissists which is highly dangerous. They manipulate people around them to get what they want. If the others crave emotional availability, a narcissist will use it as a weapon, they will be nice but as soon as they achieve their goal, they will ignore you and will keep you at bay. This kind of behavior is addictive for the victim because they live under the illusion that their narcissistic partner always comes around.

If you have a friend or a family, who is unable to read between the lines, make them see the reality of a narcissist.
