KARACHI: Sindh Assembly on Friday has elected Syed Murad Ali Shah as the 27th chief minister of the province, Aaj News reported. 

Syed Murad Ali Shah of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party and Khurrum Sher Zaman Khan of the Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf were contesting for the slot of the chief executive of the province.

However, Shah secured the position by obtaining 88 votes while Zaman of PTI bagged only three votes.

Opposition party MQM did not take part in the election whereas Pakistan Muslim League Functional and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz decided to remain neutral.

Earlier, MQM's leader Khwaja Izharul Hassan outright said that his party would abstain from the election for the next CM Sindh. He called former CM Sindh Syed Qaim Ali's eight years term as 'disappointment' and dubbed the voting as 'drama'. He said that the MQM had no hopes that the CM replacement would bring about any change or development in the province.

Sindh's ruling party, Pakistan People's Party (PPP) had decided on Sunday to replace the octogenarian chief minister of Sindh, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, with a relatively young man to what many believe face tough challenges ahead. On Monday, the party formally nominated senior Sindh minister Syed Murad Ali Shah as their candidate for the slot. The party's dominance is likely to ensure an easy win for Murad Ali Shah.
