Dense fog has caused temporary closures of various sections on motorways in Punjab, officials said on Sunday, urging commuters to exercise caution while driving.

The Motorway Police spokesperson reported that the M-1 motorway from Peshawar to Rashakai, the M-4 from Gojra to Abdul Hakim, and the M-11 from Lahore to Sialkot have all been closed due to poor visibility.

The fog and smog are becoming increasingly pronounced across Lahore and other Punjab cities as the winter weather sets in.

Falling night temperatures and temperature inversion caused air pollutants to remain suspended, reducing visibility during morning and evening hours.

According to the Punjab Environmental Department, this is a seasonal phenomenon in the province’s plains.

Currently, Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stands at 214, with low wind speeds and a significant drop in temperature.

Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said that pollutants from Indian Punjab are being carried by easterly winds, contributing to worsening smog.

Between midnight and 7am, weak winds limit the dispersion of air pollution.

While local pollution is largely under control, cross-border pollutants, low temperatures, and stagnant air are intensifying smog conditions.

The minister added that under the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, authorities are continuously monitoring the smog situation.
Strict enforcement of protective measures under a comprehensive action plan is being ensured, the minister added.

Field teams from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) remain active 24/7, issuing immediate fines for violations.

Authorities have also launched a crackdown on vehicles emitting smoke and industrial emissions as part of measures to control smog.

Marriyum Aurangzeb advised citizens to wear masks and urged individuals with sensitive health conditions to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.
