Bollywood mega star Amitabh Bachchan visited Ajmer Sharif in Rajasthan on Monday to untie a sacred thread that he had tied 40 years ago.

The 68-year-old actor paid homage at the shrine on Monday afternoon amid a huge crowd of about twenty thousand people.

Bachchan, who is set to become a grandfather soon, said he decided to make the trip after a long-wished prayer came true.

“On my way to Ajmer Sharif...was there almost 40 years ago...so much has changed since for me...reason enough to thank and pray,” Bachchan earlier wrote on Twitter. “To fulfill a ‘mannat’ (wish) made more than 40 years ago...to untie a ‘dhaga’ that I had tied!” he added.

“You untie any thread, for it is difficult to find the one that one ties almost 40 years back, and that is taken as a completion of your wish. If you wish another wish you tie another thread,” he added. Big B says it was a nostalgic visit.

“I was an unknown visitor then. I wait to see how it shapes up now tomorrow ...more things in life fraught with undesirability are overcome with prayer than any other...prayer, that is a dedication and belief in one such superior power that shall when called out to, hopefully deliver...I need that deliverance...and the prayer,” he posted.

The Big B entered the Dargah from the Solah Khamba gate instead of the main entrance to avoid the crowd but the dargah was already packed with his fans.

He offered a chadar to the tomb of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti and walked to Asthana Sharif (nearby tomb) with the basket of chadar on his head.

After paying his homage the actor left for Jaipur.

When questioned by twitter fans whether the “mannat” was for a grandchild, Bachchan wrote, “People asking if ‘mannat’ is for grandchild...NO ! use your sense...40 years ago I will ask this mannat?? silly...its personal (sic).

The shrine, dedicated to the Sufi saint who came to Ajmer from Persia in 1192, attracts thousands of pilgrims throughout the year.
