Victory at Asian Games to revive hockey, Qasim Zia

President,Pakistan Hockey Federation, Qasim Zia said on Thursday that victory at the Asian Games will infuse a new life in Pakistan hockey besides determine its future path.

"The success has dispelled the clouds of uncertainty hovering over Pakistan hockey and now we look forward to new era of hockey in Pakistan ", he told APP after Pakistan beat Malaysia 2-0 in the final at Guangzhou.

"It is like a long awaited dream coming true as we managed to win the title after 20 years and indeed it is a great victory ",he added.

"Now the time has come that we look into the future of Pak hockey with a hope to regain lost glory because this success will add to the confidence of our team inspiring them to attain more titles ",he asserted.

PHF Chief gave credit of the victory to collective team efforts and senior players saying there is no substitute of experience.

"Custodian Salman Akbar,penalty corner expert, Sohail Abbas and forward Rehan Butt excelled in their respective departments of the game and their experience was an added advantage to team which has a number of young players", he said.

The former olympian said all the team members gave their best in the final and put in their best efforts to lead the country to title which long eluded.

"In the present hockey scenario we badly needed a title victory and our success in the Asian Games will infuse a new life in Pakistan hockey which was without a title for quite a long time ",he said.

PHF Chief said with this success Pakistan team has qualified for London Olympics and participation in that mega event will help the team to look into a bright future with a new hope.

"When we took over couple of years ago we set Asian Games our main target and today it is a matter of satisfaction for us that we have achieved our set target and today is the victory of Pakistan hockey", he said.

Cesium Zia said he was fully satisfied with the performance of the team which is a blend of a youth and experience.

"PHF is making gradual progress to achieve its set targets and establishing hockey academies across the country and laying special emphasis on the grooming of junior players are the two main areas on which we are working very hard with

untired zeal to put our back our hockey on the road of progress ",he said.

He said Pak hockey team management also deserves praise for their efforts to lead them to victory.

"We will continue our efforts and will reward the players for their gold medal winning the in the Games and at this stage I will not reveal the amount of cash prize we will awarding to team members, we will honour them at a reception after arriving of the team back home", he said.
